CRAFT IN MADAGASCAR

MADAGASCAR - A LAND OF DIVERSITY

Madagascar is a remarkable island, a true earthly paradise. Over 80% of its plants and animals are endemic, found nowhere else on the planet. Though local nature faces many critical threats, its unique microclimate and diverse terrain still allow rare species to survive and traditional ways of life to endure.

RAFFIA, A GIFT FROM NATURE

In the swampy regions of the island grows the giant Raphia farinifera palm, whose enormous leaves are among the longest in the plant kingdom. From these leaves, locals hand‑process an exceptionally strong, flexible, and eco‑friendly material—raffia fiber—one of the most durable in the fashion industry.

The mature trees offer more than fiber: the heart is used in salads, oil is pressed from the seeds, and leaves and stems serve as thatch for traditional dwellings.

FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE FIBER

Raffia is a truly unique natural material, ideal for weaving and basketry. It's soft, pliable, and flexible, yet strong and long‑lasting. It withstands moisture well and accepts dyes easily.

Raffia is used to craft practical and resilient items like mats, rugs, and baskets as well as beautiful accessories such as bags, hats, and interior decorations.

How is raffia processed ?

The journey begins with harvesting the characteristically long, light‑green palm leaves. A thin membrane is carefully separated from the underside of each leaf, cut into narrow strips, and sun‑dried.

The dried fibers have a typical light beige tone and can be used in their natural form. Artisans can also dye them using natural dyes made from flowers, roots, bark, fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, or spices.

Natural dyeing gives products originality and subtle, unique pigmentation. Each shade is one‑of‑a‑kind, and its appearance may naturally evolve over time.

A DIVERSE TRADITIONAL CRAFT

Madagascar is the world's leader in raffia craftsmanship. Its crocheting tradition is 100% ethical, ecological, vegan, and sustainable yet richly diverse. There are dozens of crocheting and weaving techniques, each with its own fixed rules and distinctive style. There are dozens of crocheting and weaving techniques, each with its own fixed rules and distinctive style.

Basketry in Madagascar is carried out by trained women and often skilled men. Our raffia products are handmade in craft workshops on the island, with respect for nature, tradition, and the people who pass this art through generations. Craftsmanship is more than livelihood for the locals, it provides stable income, reduces poverty, and brings security in uncertain island conditions.

PRODUCTION WITH RESPECT FOR LIFE

Indigenous communities are closely tied to nature. Recently, their livelihoods have been threatened by deforestation and unsustainable land practices. That's why we exclusively support raffia cultivation that honors ecological principles and respects the natural landscape cycles. Crocheting requires skill, care, and patience. It is a slow process that reflects the values we share: respect for craftsmanship, nature, and time.
